McCann and McCann are a leading Belfast city law firm. Since being founded in 1980, the firm has grown from strength to strength into a multi-partner practice which provides a comprehensive and expert legal service to the community.

When the Covid-19 pandemic arrived in our midst, the intuitive functionality and cloud delivery of Insight Legal helped the practice survive and thrive while other law firms floundered. Combined with its hard-working body of fee earners, administrators and managers, the firm’s use of Insight has set the business up for success both now and into the future...

Pearse MacDermott gives evidence to the Justice Committee on the issue of Commital Reform

Pearse McDermott opens the presentation for the Law Society.

He says it appears that the bill has two objectives:
  • to abolish all physical evidence in court in advance of a trial
  • to introduce direct transfers to the Crown Court in all indictable cases

Mr MacDermott says the bill will not have the desired effects of reducing delay in criminal cases, reduce costs and prevent witnesses having to give evidence more than once.

He explains the current committal procedure in the magistrates' court. Mr McDermott says this operates as "a very important filter" to remove weak or flawed cases. He says the main cause of delay in criminal cases is at the investigation stage and there is a myth that lawyers drag out cases to increase their fees but, in fact, there is a set fee.

Inspire Disability Services Golf Classic

6/5/2017

Another big charity event for McCann and McCann to be a part of this week following the success of our marathon relay team who gave up their Bank Holiday Monday to take on the Belfast Marathon.

A big thank you to all who supported and donated to the worthy cause. We raised over £3500 for Inspire!! Donations are still welcome by dropping into the office or by the Just Giving page.

Yesterday we were the proud sponsors of the Inspire Disability Services Golf Classic in Omagh Golf Club. The Golf Classic was in aid of a particular facility in Omagh, namely Mulhern Close, a residential facility for adults with learning difficulties and special needs. The fundraiser was to raise money for a sensory garden for the residents. The weather was great and the craic was good. As main sponsors we thank you everyone who donated to this great cause and thank all who organised and participated in this event.

Spring Budget March 2017

27/4/2017

As the UK begins the formal process of exiting the European Union, the Spring Budget puts economic stability first. Following a period of robust economic growth, record levels of employment and a falling deficit, it sets out further progress in restoring the public finances to health. Building on the Industrial Strategy, it goes further in tackling the UK’s productivity challenge.

The Budget sets out actions the government will take to:
  • help young people from ordinary working families across the country get the skills they need to do the high-paid, high-skilled jobs of the future, vital for a competitive workforce
  • give more children the chance to go to a good or outstanding school that sets them up to succeed
  • support the social care system with substantial additional funding, so people get the care they deserve as they grow older, and support both local NHS plans and improvements to Accident and Emergency with new capital investment
  • invest in cutting-edge technology and innovation, so Britain continues to be at the forefront of the global technology revolution
  • continue to bring down the deficit so the UK gets back to living within its means, and can fund public services for the long-term through a fair and sustainable tax system
By investing in the future, the Budget helps make the most of the opportunities ahead by laying the foundations of a stronger, fairer, better Britain – a country that works for everyone.

The Spring Budget also marks the transition to a single fiscal event each year, an autumn Budget.

Following an initial talk to trainee estate agents at Lisburn SERC in November 2016  Orla was invited to attend the Bangor campus of SERC on the 31st January to give a talk to trainee estate agents on the conveyancing process.

The presentation entitled “Sale agreed to release of keys… and what happens in between”, provided the estate agents with a better understanding of the processes, hurdles and solutions that are encountered in residential sales and purchases.

It was an Informal but Informative evening which concluded on a useful discussion of how the conveyancing process can be improved for the benefit of all parties, most importantly, the client.

The Property Investors Network (PIN) then invited Orla to speak to their members at the Culloden on 7th February on the conveyancing process, where again the information provided was well received and remarked by the organiser as “a talk you will certainly not want to miss”.
